router, 1 1/4in.Selecting the Best Router

Routers are relatively inexpensive shop tools that can create dramatic results with wood when used with imagination and the proper training. Here are some tips when picking out a router, especially for the novice:

  1. Generally, the more power the router has, the cleaner the cut and the faster it will pass through the wood. Look at the amperage and horsepower of the routers you are considering. A router of 1 horsepower and greater is ideal.
  2. Look at the rated rpm's as well. The faster the rpm's given the same power rating, the cleaner the cut. Variable speed routers are also a nice option as different bits may work better at different speeds.
  3. Make sure you buy a model that can be easily attached to a router table. As you learn more and more about the magic of routers, you'll want to use one on a table. A router table opens a new world of artisitc possibilities.
  4. Get a router where changing bits is easy. This usually involves the use of a couple of flat wrenches included in the router package.
  5. If you plan on getting into fine work and signage, you pay want to buy a small pluge router. In this case try to get the lightest one possible.

Lastly, get a good book on routers and learn how great they can be even for the beginner. Just use all the required safety equipment as routers can also be dangerous tools.
